Magical Maldives

View of an atoll underwater

(Jolie) The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. There are 1,192 islands in the Maldives and 199 islands have cities towns and villages on them, 100 of them have hotels and resorts on them, and the rest are abandoned and nobody owns them. The Maldives is the smallest country in Asia and the lowest country in the world at five feet above sea level. The Maldives is 370 miles away from India. Malé is the capital of the Maldives and is the densest city in the world. There are 26 atolls in the Maldives. An atoll is a circular coral reef (see picture I drew).

View of atolls from the sea plane

First we took a plane from India to an island that had a runway for planes to land on then we got on a seaplane to get to the hotel. A seaplane is a normal plane that has floats on the bottom so you can take off and land in the water. When I looked out the window from the plane, the islands looked like circles that were floating on the water.

DSC_9129We went snorkeling right out of our hotel room and saw the underwater restaurant and looked inside from the outside. The sand is so white it looks like snow. Most of the water is shallow so it makes the water a really clear aquamarine blue. I went scuba diving for the first time and I saw so many types of fish. Some had orange and white stripes with a purple face. The rainbow fish were purple, blue, green, yellow and orange and in the really deep water there were electric blue fish that glowed in the deep, dark water. There were also some huge eels that were black and polka dotted and an eagle ray too. We also saw a couple of sea turtles and so much more hiding in the colorful coral.

To get around the hotel we rode bikes. We could explore or go to the game center to play badminton, giant connect 4, ping pong and more. Maldives is a hot, fun and pretty place to have a vacation and a rest in between India and China.

    Hey JoJo,
Did you notice that your t-shirt in the picture is the exact same color as the water? I am wearing a brown sweater and it matches the outdoors here also:((( please send the sunshine, heat and warm water our way. Maybe there are fans in your room you could all turn them on and face them East or west -which would be faster-I guess we have to check the air currents. That’s your homework for tomorrow check where the air currents flow from the maldives and place fans accordingly. Loved the parasailing video too-how you can see the curve of the earth in the background-so cool. Best to all and tell your sisters they will love Barrington High-I’m hoping Mrs. Ramsden reads this :))) xo to all, Mrs. M

    Jolie,
The Maldives sound fantastic…glad to see you are having fun.
We spent Easter with Uncle Andy and Aunty Kelly and the kids yesterday…Carter and Charlie danced with the Easter Bunny…the Easter Bunny told me that he missed all the Salem girls…
Auntie Francine has some Easter Candy for you, but I think I will be eating it all before you get back home…sorry!
It is finally getting warm up here. Greg’s Team won! So we are NCAA Champs, so from now on you will have to call me Uncle “National Champion” Tom…have fun!

It has snowed in New England the last twelve Saturdays, and may snow again this weekend. Enough said. 🙂

    Stunning.
When I say stunning I mean you Jolie; great photo and lovely descriptions.
You and your sisters, mum and dad have done so much on this amazing trip, experienced so much and shared with us so much excitement, beauty and filled our days with enchanted stories that we always look forward to the next blog.
You have given Saraya (8 years old), Amayah (six years old) and even Hugo (2 ½ years old) so much pleasure through your photos and your writing. Saraya, Amayah and Hugo are often in stiches watching your Holi video. Even on the twentieth time!
Hugo fell of the stool, when he saw the video of the Salem girls karting in New Zealand as he imitated them going round the corner.
Amayah could not believe the “blues” that this amazing universe can conjure up when she repeatedly looked at your Antarctic photos; hocked from the start.
Saraya loved the tigers and the elephants and you’re fetching blue workers clothes in the rice paddies.
And now they have a travel bug so large that we will have to take them away this summer for a really good trip!
We look forward to the next blog perhaps from under water!

Lots of love from the Perdios Family, George, Shaala, Saraya, Amayah and Hugo.
Enjoy the break before China, you’re in Gods holiday resort!

Hi Jolie, I can’t wait for Ava to read all about your snorkeling and scuba diving. It all sounds magical! The first time that I went scuba diving, I found it surprising that God put all the neon and fluorescent colors in the ocean.
You sure look happy riding that bike on the dock! Ava and Rocco think it’s so funny that you took a “vacation from your vacation.”
Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.

    Hi Jolie,
Your writing is as magical as the Maldives. You bring it alive with your research and description. Well done. I am impressed that you went scuba diving. I would be scared, but you are young and daring.
I am glad that you told me what an atoll is. The picture makes it even more clear. Loved seeing you on a bike having fun.
    I miss you all.
