Mahi Maya
(Maya) Sumba Island, Indonesia. On today’s agenda was fishing. We woke up at 7:00 am and got ready to go fishing. We took a little zodiac to get to our fishing boat. It was a lot harder than you may think. There were massive waves that were breaking close to shore and we had to figure out how to navigate around them. We were split in two groups; group 1 has to conquer the huge waves first. I was in the second group. It took ten locals to help us out to sea. We had to wait a little until it was calmer then they would say GO and we scampered to the zodiac and drove to the boat. Sydney (our 25 year old cousin) and Parker (Sydney’s boyfriend) joined us in Indonesia.
We had a 30-minute boat ride to get to the fishing aggregated device (FAD). The FAD is a bamboo raft hooked to the ocean floor. It provides shade for the little fish then the big fish come to eat the little ones so now it’s a fishing frenzy. Right off the bat we trolled three lines. Zara and I were voted the first to reel in a fish. Fish on!! I scurried to the pole and started to reel. Fish on!! Another fish! I caught a little baitfish. Zara reeled her Mahi Mahi fish onto the boat. Two fish already in two minutes.
Halle was up next and she caught a Mahi Mahi as well. The Mahi Mahi fish are greenish-blue and they have a big long fin on top. Sydney caught about 10 little bait fish. Jolie hooked a small shark but then it got away. Parker caught a small mako shark and brought it up to the boat then set it free. We were still trolling three lines. Fish on! My turn to reel one in. This time it was not a bait fish but a huge Mahi Mahi. I tried reeling it in but it was too big and my dad had to help. Even he had trouble reeling it in. We kept reeling and it kept running. It jumped three times but we managed to get it in the boat. I caught the biggest fish that day. Looks like we’re having Mahi Mahi for lunch.

Much blessings and love
Hey there Mahi Maya!
Loved your post and the video of you reeling in the monster Mahi Mahi. I think we would make good fishing partners! When Uncle John & I were in Hawaii last month I went deep sea fishing with him. Waves were 6-10 ft! And yes, I did take Dramamine just in case! We caught three fish; a Skipkack, a Yellow Fin Tuna and a Mahi Mahi. The Mahi Mahi was definitely the hardest to reel in. I can relate to you having to have help from Dad reeling it in. I couldn’t do it either. It’s a lot harder than it looks, isn’t it?
Sounds like you guys had a great time fishing!
