Out of Africa

DSC_6225(Paul) The last 54 days in Africa was truly a highlight. From great white shark diving in Cape Town, to sand boarding in Namibia, to being charged by elephants in Botswana, and seeing the great migration in Kenya and Tanzania, we will always treasure these memories. Sleeping under the stars with the kids in little pop tents as the noise of lions, elephant and hippos will make home seem boring. We saw lion kills and cheetahs chasing gazelles at full speed while little cheetah cubs played.  We really did witness the circle of life on the golden brown plains of the Massai Mara and the Serengeti. To top it all off, we experienced the amazing people of Africa. Their smiles were warm and genuine, and even though they don’t have what we describe as wealth, they seem to have so much happiness that I think we can all learn from them. Even the kids in school are so happy to be able to learn, it was inspiring.

So our journey of 215 days, 24 countries and a lifetime of experiences has come to an end. We know we will get the endless questions about what was your favorite country. My highlights include Antartica, New Zealand, Bhutan, the Great Barrier Reef and all of Africa. The most unique experience had to be Papua New Guinea which has not really reached the 20th century, let alone the 21st century. The one month we spent in India really let us live the culture and by far let us experience the best food on the entire trip. Nepal will forever be remembered for the tragic earthquake that we just missed and the devastation that it caused.  So as you can see, it is hard to pick a favorite.

Most importantly, It is hard to describe in words what this has meant to our family. I guess five or ten years from now, I think we will fully appreciate this family adventure when Navyn and I look back and realize how much closer we became as a family.  Without a doubt, our girls became closer, they did not have the distractions of friends and iPhones, and to watch Jolie and Zara play together and watch Halle and Maya interact will hopefully last forever.

I am also grateful to have Navyn as my travel partner and partner in life. Like everything she does, she does with perfection. Her blogs and photos will be treasured forever. Her ability to be the glue to our family makes me very lucky to be her husband.

We will miss having an adventure every day but as I’m fond of saying, “That was a once in a lifetime trip, I can’t wait to do it again!!” The only thing we missed on our trip was friends and family and as we know pull into Barrington, there really is no place like home.

We met you briefly in Kalimantan visiting the orangutans and have talked about your family many times since! It has been so fun following your adventures and reading your incredible blogs. What an inspiration! As we try to settle into a new life in Colorado after 14 years in Indonesia, we wish you all the best as you also get back into school, sports, work, etc.

Paul and Navyn, Thank you for sharing your adventures during your travels, the stories and pictures were so interesting…I will miss visiting your website!! I’m sure your family will treasure the experience of visiting such exotic places for a long time, but I would bet that the longest and best memories will be about the time you were able to be together. Welcome back! All the best, Michael
